Horatio Alger wrote 135 dime novels in the latter part of the 19th century. His stories were rags to riches stories illustrating how down-and-out boys might be able to achieve the American Dream. Alger's stories empathize the need for hard work and honesty as a way to get ahead. Alger describes young men in the city trying to get a head as newsboys, match boys, peddlers, street musicians, and many others. In Facing the World a boy's parents have both died. His guardian is unkind and unjust. The boy runs away and is fortunate to find a mentor who gives him a job as his helper in his magic act. They travel over the country and have many interesting experiences.

Having never read anything by Alger before, I was excited to start this book. I'm a big fan of 19th century moralistic fiction (it's a weird thing to like, but whatever). I thought the first part of this book was really enjoyable -- a young man is left in the care of a horrible and greedy ward. Will he be able to use his wits (and exceptional moral sense) to prevail? Unfortunatly, the second half of the book was taken up with an overlong and tedious ship adventure.

If the entire book had the pace and spirit of the first half, I would have loved this book. As it was, I found myself just longing for it to end.

Facing the World Horatio Alger 9781438533162 Books Reviews

Not as positive as hoped.
This story started as an Horatio Alger book generally does but finished before what seems to be the actual interesting part begins, that is Harry exploring Australia and becoming a man.
This book isn't quite as good as others he has wrote but still plenty of action on the high seas.
I liked this because not only was it interesting, but I could picture it really happening-a realistic type journey.
No negaitve, just an enjoyable book to read.
